If you’re new to the world of Cannabis you may not be familiar with the word ‘Kief’. You may however be familiar with words like ‘Sour Dream’ or ‘Purple Haze’. That’s because most stoners are busy jumping from strain to strain not realising that there’s a better way to get high on pot. And that way is Kief.
What is Kief?
Kief is a byproduct of marijuana. It is the bulbous formation at the tip of a trichome. Trichomes are the resin glands of the plant that contain THC, CBD and other active cannabinoids. Trichomes act as a defense mechanism for the marijuana plant. Much like when we get a cut, the body goes to work healing the wound, in a similar way when a hungry herbivore devours a marijuana plant the animal gets disoriented and turned off from consuming the rest of the leaves. Luckily for us these defense mechanisms are what makes marijuana what it is, a calming drug that helps us be more at ease.
What makes it special?
Kief is truly where the action is. It’s the most potent part of a marijuana plant packed with active cannabinoids. Kief has the most concentrated THC content as compared to the rest of the bud. The resinous trichomes house most of the active cannabinoids in marijuana making them the most prized among Cannabis connoisseurs. Consider this, the joint you roll gets you high only because the Kief is mixed in with the dried herb. But there is a way to seperate the Kief from the marijuana that makes things very interesting.
How to separate Kief?
The easiest way to separate Kief from the bud is to use a grinder. Preferably a three compartment grinder. There are a ton of cheap ones on Amazon. The grinder basically breaks down the bud into smaller more manageable chunks. A three compartment grinder consists of a grinding chamber, a collection chamber and a Kief chamber. You put your dried herb in the grinding chamber attach the lid and give the whole thing a good screw. During the grinding process the buds are sliced and diced and the Kief is dislodged from the plant matter. The Kief gets collected in the kief chamber while the buds get collected in the collection chamber.
How to use Kief?
Once you get a hold of enough Kief there are a ton of things an adventurous stoner can do.
Kief makes an excellent companion when cooking with Cannabis. Firstly it requires no prep time as compared to working with plant material. Secondly it packs more punch and lastly it does not impart quite the punch of Cannabis flavor to the food. Before cooking you need to decarboxylate the Kief. You can do this by preheating the oven to 300 degrees fahrenheit and baking it in an oven safe container for 7 minutes. Then mix the butter and Kief on slow flame and freeze. Voila your kief cannabutter is ready.
Want to make your smoke sesh more memorable. Then the next time you’re rolling a joint sprinkle some Kief over the bud. A great way to revive bad weed and add an extra punch to your joint or blunt. For an advanced experience dampen the outside of your joint with a lick and then roll the top 1/3rd of the joint in Kief. Often called as twaxed joints these beauties get you high really quick.
The next time you’re hitting your bong, add an exclamation point by packing it in with Kief. The first few hits will be enough to take you to outer space and back, I assure you!
Moon Rock Weed
If you’re wondering what the hell moon rock weed is, you’re not alone. It’s a combination of your Cannabis buds sprayed in hash oil and generously sprinkled with Kief. This potent combination packs in at around 50% THC content which is literally insane!
Yes you read that right. By applying the right amount of heat and pressure you can convert your Kief into smokable hash and the methods to make it are so easy, anyone can. For starters bag a few grams of Kief in a cellophane paper and place it inside the heel of your shoe. Then just go about your business and in a few days, voila your Kief has just been pressed into hash. You can do this in a machine press or even by moulding it in your hands. The choices to make Kief hash are endless.
Top Kief heavy cannabis strains
White Widow is a hybrid strain that is a cross between Brazilian Sativa and South Indian Indica, and packs in a ton of the good stuff. Its buds are white with crystal resin and anyone who has seen it knows just how powerful it really is. Expect a burst of euphoria followed by stimulating conversations and creativity.
Hashish nuggets hold a earthy aroma with a hint of hash and a dash of sweetness for good measure. Its pungent taste and spicy aroma may turn off few enthusiasts but the relaxed feeling you get after you’ve smoked the hash plant is incomparable. An Indica dominant hybrid the Hash plant packs in 10-13% THC content and with its resin dripped buds also a lot of Kief.
Chemdog, is the original source of powerhouse strains like Sour Diesel and OG Kush, and is known for its distinct, diesel-like aroma. While you can, smell it from a mile away, Chemdog packs in 15-20%THC which is potent enough to give you a cerebral experience. But be warned this is not a strain for the faint of heart. It’s a body high so expect a day filled with couch lock and dry mouth. The resinous texture also a clear indicator of just how much Kief this strain has.
